What is ABA?
Applied behavior analysis is a systematic approach to teaching skills and addressing behavior challenges based in the science of behavior and learning. The goal of ABA treatment is to teach individuals to use more effective behaviors to navigate their environments, therefore decreasing their need to rely on maladaptive behaviors. Applied behavior analysis is considered an evidence-based best practice treatment by the US Surgeon General and the American Psychological Association.

Who benefits from ABA practices?
Interventions based in applied behavior analysis have empirically demonstrated effectiveness in individuals diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down syndrome, intellectual disabilities and other developmental disabilities. Additionally, ABA treatments have been effectively used to support individuals with social, emotional and mental health needs.

What is a BCBA?
From the Behavior Analyst Certification Board website (www.bacb.com/bcba):
“The Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) is a graduate-level certification in behavior analysis. Professionals certified at the BCBA level are independent practitioners who provide behavior-analytic services.”
A BCBA must complete all eligibility requirements to sit for the Board Examination. After successfully passing the exam, the BCBA must maintain the certification by meeting continuing education requirements and adhering to the Board’s code of ethics.
